The Quechua language is quietly disappearing from the mouths of the valley's children. At Yachay Wasicha, we hold it close — teaching and speaking the Quechua language, Runasimi, not as a relic to be studied but as a living tongue to be lived.
Alongside it, the traditions of the Andes — weaving, music, story, and ceremony — are woven into everyday learning, so children grow up fluent not only in words, but in who they are.
Honoring and preserving Quechua language and traditions
Culture lives in practice, not in theory. Over seventeen years, we have shown up for the ceremonies, anniversaries, and celebrations that mark the rhythm of community life in Pisaq and the mountains — not as observers, but as participants.
We support these traditions the way a family does: by being present, by honoring what matters to the community, and by helping carry it forward.

Creating spaces for intergenerational knowledge transmission
In the Andes, knowledge has always passed from hand to hand, elder to child, across the generations.
We create the spaces where that exchange can happen — gathering places in the communities, storytelling and oral history in the classroom, and the everyday meetings between young and old that keep ancestral knowledge alive. When a grandmother's wisdom reaches a child's ears, something irreplaceable is saved.
Fostering cultural pride and identity
For too long, the message reaching young people has been that to succeed, they must leave — their village, their language, their identity behind. We offer a different story: that to be Quechua, to be of these mountains, is something to carry with pride.
Through every class, every song, every shared meal, children come to know that their heritage is not a limitation to escape, but a strength to stand on.
Honoring tradition does not mean closing the door to the wider world. We help children hold both — confidence with English and modern skills, alongside the language and wisdom of their ancestors.
This is education that empowers without displacing: young people equipped to move through the contemporary world without ever losing the ground they come from.
